About KEI

The Kiel Earth Institute (KEI) is a virtual research institution concerned with key issues of global change and their socio-economical consequences.
Globalisation of economic activities, the scarcity of natural resources, and environmental change are challenges all modern societies have to face.

KEI aims to develop practical solutions addressing these challenges and communicating them to society.
Development of strategies and instruments for dealing with these global challenges requires close cooperation between researchers from different disciplines including public and private decision-makers. The KEI provides a platform to facilitate discussion and a solution orientated cooperation. It will help to manage institutional or disciplinary boundaries.

KEI has three organizational tasks:

  • The KEI facilitates cooperation between researchers and decision-makers. It identifies relevant societal questions, analyses them, and develops practical solutions.
  • The KEI provides a forum that brings together expertise from economics, natural and social sciences.
  • The KEI supports the transfer of knowledge from its interdisciplinary research activities to society.

The idea for KEI emerged from an intensive cooperation between the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences (IFM-GEOMAR) and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) within the scope of the cluster of excellence “The Future Ocean”. The KEI is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Ministry of Science, Economic Affairs and Transport of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Bringing together research and decision-making for societal needs in the area of global change is the main task for KEI.

KEI offers:
  • Translation of urgent societal problems into research questions that require an interdisciplinary approach.
  • Initiation of research projects.
  • Management of interdisciplinary projects.
  • Practical application of research results via consultancy services.
  • Delivery of research results to society.
